42 views8 pages

Document Summary

Skeletal and smooth are elongated = muscle fibers. Ability of muscle to shorten or contract depends on 2 types of myofilaments, the muscle cell equivalents of the microfilaments. Striated muscle (stripes), and voluntary muscle (only muscle subject to conscious control) Contract rapidly and with great force, but it tires easily and needs rest. Thousands of fibers are bundled together by connective tissue which provides strength. Each muscle fiber is enclosed by a connective tissue sheath called endomysium. Several sheathed muscle fivers are then wrapped by a fibrous membrane called perimysium to form a bundle of fibers fascicle. Many fascicles are bound together to cover the connective tissue calls epimysium, which covers the entire muscle. Epimysia blend into tendons or aponeuroses (which attach to bones, cartilages, or connective tissue coverings) Most tough collagenic fibers, so they can cross rough bones, where other fibers would tear. Found in walls of hollow visceral organs (stomach, urinary bladder, respiratory)
