BIOM 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Myelin, Schwann Cell, Ion Channel
Document Summary
Dendrites, which are the docking ite of synapses of other neurons. A single axon which carries the nerve impulse (ap) Synapses, at the endo f the axon which caontain the neurotransmitter substance used to activate other cells (communication) Multipolar neaurons- many extensions from the cell body. Locaitong in special sense organs (nose and eye) Unipolar neaurons- have a short single process leaving the cell body. In all cases, the nerve impulses move from the dendrites toward the synapses. Multipolar and unipolar neaurons are myelinated; the bipolar neaurons are non myelinated. The ap travels along the axon from the cell body toward the axon terminals. Space between myelin sheath are called nodes of ranvier. The sheath is formed by schwann cells around axon. In myelinated axons ap are only found the nodes of ranvier. This jumping of the action potentional along the axon is called salutatory conduction. Ap jumps from one node rto the next permitting rapid transfer of signal.
