ENVS 3010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Loline Alkaloid, Phenology, Herbivore
Document Summary
Lecture 10: herbivory and phenology: everything that affects plants affects herbivores too. Plant-insect interactions: nutritional composition, most insects are nitrogen limited, chemical composition, nitrogen-based compounds, alkaloids (e. g. nicotine, lolines, carbon-based compounds, phenolics (e. g. phenolic acids, tannins, physical characteristics, leaf toughness, thickness. Insect herbivore response to eco2: generally no difference but huger variance among species. Insect weight, developmental time, abundance, and survival are not affected by e. Co2 increase (generalized over all type of insect species) Single species: elevated co2 can affect insect abundance, elevated co2 does not generally increase insect abundance, meta-analysis try to make generalizations. But, that is not to say that there are insect species that are more abundance under higher levels of co2. Different feeding guilds: on average, eco2 may impact phloem feeders positively, on average, eco2 may impact foliage feeders negatively. Compensatory feeding: compensatory feeding: insects (and herbivores) have to eat more plant material that was growing under eco2, to cover the nitrogen requirements.
