1 in 5 people will suffer from mental health illnesses. Mental illness: alterations in thinking, mood, behaviour associated with significant distress, dysfunction, and impaired functioning: women more likely to be diagnosed with depression. Post-partum: women more likely to be prescribed medication. Stigma: treat mental illnesses differently that physical illnesses, negative attitudes, media has a large role in the stigma, lead to judgement, lack of support, isolation. Physical, mental, and emotional symptoms: phobias, panic attacks, panic disorder, ptsd, obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd) Warning signs: feelings of hopelessness, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of death or suicide. Irregular sleep: decreased energy, changes in mood, restlessness. Insomnia: difficulty making decisions, appetite and weight loss, sad, anxious, empty mood, tearfulness. Most often successfully treated with therapy and/or medication. Mediation can take 3-4 weeks to lead to significant change, 8 weeks to reach full impact. Medications can have risks as well as benefits. Second highest cause of death among 15-39 years old.
