Zimmerman: the north american family is close to becoming a domestic institution. The family institution is bigger than the sum of it"s parts: not just the parents and children as individuals but also their relationships. Women who took 12 or less week"s maternity leave sufered from depression. Fathers who take paternity leave have a correlation to be more involved in their lives. Beneits businesses: doesn"t have to train new employees. Quebec: more likely to have a father that takes paternity leave. Women have increased in the labour force: 42% in 1976, 63% in 2008. Increase in opportunities for women: service sector, non-standard work. The relationship between work and family is dynamic and changes across the lifespan: young mothers returning to work, older men retiring and taking part in child care. Daughters of working mothers are more likely to: be employed, be supervisors, earn more money.
