Quality of sperm is poor, due to disease or defects in sperm manufacturing. Low motility can"t swim well (genetics, age, smoking, drinking) Inability to ovulate caused by: disease, drug use, alcohol, smoking, extremely under or overweight, age, hormonal imbalances. Contractions: braxton- hicks contractions = false labor, widen (dilate) cervix, move fetus closer to cervix. Stage #1: begin with contractions (10 cm dilated effaced, 8-14 hours primiparous mothers, 6 hours multiparous mothers, 40-60 seconds every 3-4 minutes apart. Stage #2: infant passes through cervix, 60-90 seconds in 2-3 minutes. Stage #3: birth of placenta (afterbirth, > 1 hour after birth, contractions several hours, placenta expelled, uterus closes to prevent bleeding. Comanche and tewa indian tribes: heat on abdomen. Mother;s position on delivery: sitting, back, kneeling. As soon as they are born, and then again 5 minutes later. Majority of infants with birth defects: ses, diet, environmental conditions, stress, medical care, family relationships.
