If a behaviour that was being reinforced stops being reinforced, that behaviour will decrease (and become extinct) We can use this to eliminate behaviour. It can be very effective: when you believe that a reinforcer that"s occurring naturally in the persons environment is encouraging a negative behaviour. Select behaviour to be decreased (be specific): select proper location (behaviour might get worse before getting better, possible aggression, select behaviour for which you can control the reinforcers maintaining it. Girl keeps saying no to picking up toys. Mom didn"t walk away, she stayed there and fought with daughter. Most to least difficult to extinguish: variable ratio, fixed ratio, variable interval, fixed interval. Ratio schedules are more difficult than interval. Variable schedules are more difficult than fixed. If the reinforcer starts again behaviour will be picked up again more quickly then before. Extinction program might be undone by other, less knowledgeable people.
