Avignon papacy (1309-1378): pope moved to avignon, now under the influence of the french. Great schism (1378-1417): pope in avignon and another pope in rome. Undermined the power of the church as a whole. Corruption in the church: these would bring criticism to the church. Letters of indulgence (a document that claimed to shorten one"s time in purgatory) Married priests (or priests with openly recognized concubines) Jesus present only in spirit (eucharist) in communion. Needed to be focussed on spiritual matters and not worldly matters. This contradicts the catholic view that the bread and wine of communion literally transforms into the flesh and blood of jesus christ. He viewed repentance as the only exit out of purgatory - not purchased documents. Personally translated parts of the bible to english for the general public. Felt that people needed to read the bible for themselves.
