The people who took down the taiping are heroes. Hakka: subdivision of han chinese people noble descent. Emphasis on literacy in both sexes gender equality greater than in mainstream han society; no foot binding. Hakka culture lived communally alienating for those outside of hakka society. Hakka; came from a poor family; inspired many people. Worked as a teacher after failing his exams 4 times; failed a 5th time before. 1836 missionary gave him a pamphlet: good words for exhorting the age experiencing dreams where he believed he was the son of god. Purpose: god sent him to rid china of confucianism; christianity was born in china and travelled to the west; christianity needed to be reinstated. Hong xiuquan memorial museum, xinhua town, 1991. Military tactician; helped propel the taiping people from the west into the heart of. The wind of god god speaks through him; conflict with hong xiuquan.
