Document Summary

Lecture 19 - human health depends on microbiota health. More bacteria living in your gut than people on the planet. Microbial ecosystems highly variable in composiion and abundance between people. High diversity promotes health, balance, funcional redundancy, and resistance to disease. Low diversity promotes sickness, imbalance, funcional disability, and suscepibility to disease. Bacterial community remains stable from the ime you are weaned of breast milk to old age (not well understood, potenially iga anibodies) Do as much work for you as our liver. Metabolism: fermentaion of non-digesible substances, produce vitamins. Structural: villi and crypts, maintain ight juncions stop things from leaking, iga producion, mucus. Protecion: colonizaion resistance, innate and adapive immunity, inlammatory cytokine oversight. Interacion with environment (puing things in mouths may be evoluionary response to gain exposure!) The window is narrow: acquire them when you are a baby! Can"t change your microbiota easily as you age.
