Many states evolved by centralizing power in central government: centralizaion: concentraion of power in a single body, usually the principal government. Lack of desire to share power resulted in the creaion of unitary states. Centralising power had 2 goals: defeat and suppress rivals, strengthen state vis- -vis neighbours. Consolidaion only possible for some states through power sharing and decentralizaion: decentralizaion: power and authority is taken from the central government and conferred to non-central (state, regional or provincial) governments. Decentralizaion of power led to the creaion of federal states. Confederalism: regional or consituent governments give limited powers to central government. Central government relies on regional governments for authority and legiimacy. European union: sovereign eniies have agreed to surrender certain elements of power to. Brussels: economic and poliical union of 27 european states. Unitary: concentraion of poliical authority and powers within one central government which is solely responsible for both domesic and foreign aciviies.
