Immigrants from many parts of the world have added greatly to the diversity of canada: bringing assorted values, beliefs, identities and political perspectives. Protecting individual freedom is essential to ensuring that those with contrasting beliefs, cultures and values can live according to their own convictions. Providing equal rights and benefits for those with different characteristics or lifestyles. The charter of right and freedoms and human rights code prohibit various forms of discrimination based on such characteristics as race, ethnic origin, sex, age, religion. Diversity used to trigger negative thoughts and feelings: ex: in the past people from foreign cultures were expected to assimilate to the dominant canadian culture by adopting language, customs, values, etc. Unity requires a feeling of solidarity among the diverse groups making up the country and a consensus about the basic political values by which the country is governed. Criteria of a good government: accountability.
