Gender: what it is to be masculine, what it is to be feminine. A new concept - gender has been around for 30 years. Sex, sex role - male and female is part of gods plan, biology becomes a sense. Simone de beavoir: separating biological fact from social expectations of a role. One is born female but becomes a woman. Gender is at the heat of the exercise of power, of the relations of authority in a system of power. Systems of power historically in the western tradition. Classical antiquity: fixed, divine order of authority, the ideal realm. Through reason that you can get to that divine and fixed order, to understand what it is like to govern a city and people. Feudal europe: authority exerted through the church hierarchy who possessed the knowledge of divine authority through the revelation of the word of god. Modern through: authority secular and rational, conventional.
