Week 1: sex, gender and systems of power. Gender: what it is to be masculine or feminine. A new concept, in the mid 20th century. From the 1500 onwards people spoke of sex and sex roles (part of god"s plan which later turned to being synonymous with biology) Simon de beauvoir first separated biological fact from social expectations of a role one is born female and becomes a women : this becoming has been contested ever since. Often marginalized in politics and social science: authority is mediated power (max weber) At the heart of the exercise of power in a system of power. Classical antiquity: fixed, divine order of authority, the ideal realm. Human reason was used to find the divine order. Feudal europe: authority exerted through the church hierarchy who possessed the knowledge of divine authority through the revelation of the word of god. No political activity could operate without divine authority.
