Physiological equilibrium or balance around an optimal set point. Ideal fixed setting of a particular physiological system. Useful for motivative behaviour doesn"t always work well. Hierarchical model: maslow"s hierarchy of needs. Highest: psychological needs for growth and fulfill. When someone gets hungry you see a drop in glucose in the body. Lesion the area, animals don"t eat, or eat just enough to survive.
