Types of explanations: ability, task difficulty- how easy or hard a task you performed was, effort. Cultures tend to use different explanations for success and failure. Talks about the concept of attribution; when the actor has the same attribution of the action as the person who is observing them. In some cultures if your friend is in the hospital you only have the option of going to visit them. In our culture we would think that would means he wants to have sex, so we would say no. he is saying he wants to sleep next to you; it is an expression of trust. If your interpretation is having sex and his is a trusting one there is a breakdown of attribution. In individualistic cultures people tend to focus on the individual as determining the cause of behaviour. People attribute success and to ability and failure to external factors.
