Whenever individuals belonging to one group interact, collectively or individually, with another group or its members in terms of their group identification, we have an instance of intergroup behaviour (sherif, 1966, pg. 12: dyadic level- happens at individual level i. e. ; a student representing a group at the university. To reduce the complexity of the world. To make things easier for us because we don"t have the cognitive capacity to process everything in the world. Principle of least effort- our tendency to simplify everything. Human cognitive capacity is limited- we don"t have the capacity to process every individual thing by itself. Categorization is an efficient was to deal with wide stimuli: social categorization. Social- classification of people into groups based on common attributes. Gender is the most significant social category, followed by ethnicity and age. Physical attractiveness, style, hairstyle etc. are social: consequences of categorization categories.
