Nation state = central agency that is responsible for organizing each responsible for a specific thing: three branches of government legislative, executive, judiciary , modern nation-states are . Run by professionals: there is a monopoly over the use of physical force by the government (police/army) Must disarm people to provide law and order. Liberal-democratic theory: institution that provides law and order security from foreign nations, resulted from the fear of the state, emphasis of individual rights. Marxist theory: government helps capitalist classes to oppress the working class. Crimes of the state: states sometimes misuse their power to hurt their own population, especially by corrupt governments, can also misuse their powers to hurt other populations, individual people (e. g. leaders) should be held responsible. Repressive strategies by the state: army/intelligence services, criminal justice system.
