BIOL 2410 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone, Zona Fasciculata, Thyroid Peroxidase
Document Summary
Adrenal cortex secretes steroid hormones: zona glomerulosa - secretes aldosterone, zona fasciculata - cortisol - a glucocorticoids, zona reticularis - sex hormones. Essential for life - if you don"t have it - you die. Role in the mediation of long term stress. Protective against hypoglycemia through permissive effect: works with glucagon - controls blood glucose levels. Promotes new glucose: causes breakdown of skeletal muscle protein. Needs amino acids: enhances lipolysis frees fatty acid to be used for energy, suppresses the immune system, causes negative calcium balance. The control of cortisol secretion: crh - releasing hormone is secreted by hypothalamus. Crh causes the release of acth from anterior pituitary. Acth causes the release of cortisol from adrenal cortex. Inhibits the inflammatory response: for treating bee stings, poison ivy, and pollen allergies, helps prevent rejection of transplanted organs. Exogenous administration may shut down acth production and adrenal cells that produce cortisol atrophy. Cortisol pathologies results from too much or too little hormone.
