Fields of physiology functional genomics systems biology integrative biology. Shows the overlap of the area of the organism to the field of science it concerns itself with. Shows the overlap between different fields of science. Physiology is unique in that it overlaps with molecular biology, cell biology and many other topics. Function is based on structure therefore physiology is closely tied with anatomy. Cell membrane composed of lipids and proteins separates the cell from its external environment. 10 organ systems (figure 1. 2: integumentary system. Protective boundary that separates the body"s internal environment from the external environment: musculoskeletal system. *the next 4 systems exchange nutrients between the internal and external environments: respiratory (pulmonary) system. *the next four extend throughout the whole body: circulatory (cardiovascular) system. Distributes materials through the action of pumping blood through vessels: nervous system. Specialized cells in this system are scattered throughout the body. Protect the body by intercepting foreign material in the intestines and lungs.
