MBIO 3010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Microorganism, Hepatitis B Virus, Syphilis
Document Summary
We have many viral genomes in our own dna that aren"t infectious anymore to us. Adaptation of both microbe (parasite) and host over time. Myxoma virus - spread by mosquitoes - infects rabbit. Introduced into australia in 1950 to control rabbit population. Initially 99% died, but more rabbits survived over time. Less lethal strain of virus replaced original. Types of microbial infections: microbial attachment / penetration mechanism, biting arthropod, skin wound / animal bite, antimicrobial defences impaired local or general spread in body (strep throat vs chicken pox) Steps of infection: attachment and possible entry into body - nd a cell with its speci c receptor. 2: multiplication, evasion of hosts defences (throughout the whole process, shedding from body (exit, damage to host - not a requirement but some damage usually required for shedding. Less than 1@ of bacteria are able to be cultured. Could be seeing immune response rather than bacteria, might not be able to isolate.
