Document Summary
Temperament = characteristic mood, activity level and emotional reactivity. Longitudinal design = observe one group repeatedly over a period of time. Cross-sectional design = compare groups of participants of differing age at a single point in time. Cohort effects = differences in age groups are due to the groups growing up in different time periods. Attachment = close, emotional bonds of affection that develop between infants and their caregivers. Separation anxiety = emotional distress seen in many infants when they are separated from people with whom they have formed an attachment. Secure attachment = briefly upset when caregiver leaves, happy when returns. Anxious/ambivalent attachment = anxious when mother is near, protests when leaves, not comforted upon return. Avoidant attachment = seek little contact with mother, not distressed when she leaves. Disorganized/disoriented attachment = confused about whether should approach/avoid mother, insecure. Stage = a developmental period during which characteristic patterns of behaviour are exhibited and certain capacities become established.
