13.1 Gender Stereotypes
Beliefs about how males and females different in personality traits, interests ad behaviors
Instrumental traits- describe individuals that are active and influential in their world
Express traits – describe individuals that are high in emotional functioning and value
interpersonal relationship
Learning Gender Stereotypes
By 1.5 years babies begin to pay more attention to toys that are associated with their gender
There’s a gradual accumulation of beliefs and behavior
By 11 they have the same gender stereotypes as adults
- Start understand they’re exception to stereotype which not apply to everyone
- Girls tend to be more flexible
Education is negatively correlated with stereotyped views
- Parents transmitted less
13.2 Gender Differences
There are more gender similarities than differences
Existing differences are not large
1. Physical Development and Behavior
- Boy perform better at strength based tasks and skills (larger motor skills)
- Girls perform better at tasks requiring fine (girls grow bones faster)(littler motor skills)-
motor coordination
- Boys tend to be more physical active; part of expectation they are encourage
- Boys engage in more risk taking behaviors
- Girls tend to be healthier than boys
2. Intellectual Abilities and Achievement
- Girls have better languages skills

- Boys are better at identifying relationship between objects in space

- In younger grades girls are better at computational math nut in higher grades boys are
better at solving math problems
- Girls get better grades in math course but score lower than boys on standardized math test

skills in a particular area
-Stereotype stratification – cognitively viewing oneself as a member of a subgroup to which
the stereotype does not apply
3. Differences in Personality and Social Behavior
- Aggressive behavior: girls are not expected (parents are more likely to use physical
punishment toward boys)
girls are more emotionally aggressive (e.g. spread rumor)
- Reading Emotions: girls tend to be better, temporal lobe develop faster (seem)
Girls tend to be rumination, boys always distract themselves
- Conformity: females are more easily influenced by others
- Depression: particular among in teenage girls (more girls than boys)
girls tend to be pessimistic (I don’t have that kind of ability, I just can’t!!)
less diagnosis than girls (boys tend to isolate themselves and express anger)
13.3. Gender Identity/Gender Typing
The socializing influences of people and the media
-Process of learning behaviors associated with each gender
-Different agents of socialization
Parents
- Provide children with distinctive clothing, room furnishings, toys
- Fathers treat children in more gender-typical ways than mothers do
(Father push son to be independent, treat girl protectively and more directly speech)
