Document Summary

Liver largest gland in the body: makes bile, back up storage is liver, most excess carbs in muscle, but can pack more in liver (so more per gram in liver) but more muscle than liver cells available. 4 primary lobes: anchored to the lesser curvature of the stomach by the lesser omentum. Blood vessels: hepatic artery, hepatic portal vein produces bile, travels through the common hepatic duct, fuses with cystic duct from gall bladder to form bile duct. Bile alkaline solution bile salts and phospholipids aid in digestion. Bile salts fat emulsi cation separates fat molecules throughout the intestinal contents recycled to the liver. Bilirubin bile pigment: waste product of heme (breakdown of rbcs) absorbed from the blood by liver cells. Jaundice condition, yellowness of eyes and skin results from deposition of bile pigment (excess bilirubin in blood) Causes: obstruction of bile passageways, excess destruction of rbcs, disturbance in liver cells gallstone blocking common bile duct.
