Document Summary

In the inner mitochondrial space, glucose and fatty acids undergo glycolysis (to harness the energy present in these substrates) They enter the citric acid cycle, where electrons are transferred to nad+ to create nadh. Nadh then enter the electron transport chain and the electrons are passed on to oxygen, producing h2o. The hydrogens that are pumped out act as a gradient potential used by atp synthase to convert adp and pi into atp. Role of target molecule cell maintenance impaired internal maintenance causing cell injury and cell death. It essentially blocks atp synthesis: used as a pesticide to kill rats, but is poses a problem as non-target animals can also be exposed to it and killing them, e. g. Chlordecone (an organochlorine) = inhibits atp synthase enzyme involved in converting adp to atp. It reduces the electrochemical gradient, same as the pentachlorophenol. It is used to drive muscle contraction and the release of neurotransmitters b/w neurons.
