In english 90% of emotional information is conveyed in body language : not what you are saying but how you say it (like sarcasm, can show age, gender, emotional state (women speak different from men) The basic elements of body language are universal: laughing, crying, smiling. Full mouth smiles, the shape doesn"t just move. Some aspects of body language are universal and some are not: smiles universal, certain postures that are characteristic of men and women in north. America but not elsewhere: women legs crossed proper closed, men legs spread, open, confident. We use non-verbal cues to tell us how to respond to others: gets confusing when we get confusing signals. Some people may be like this all the time usually different cultural background: personal space is smaller among mediterranean people (like italians) Is the best way to communicate but also gets in the way of communication.
