BIOL239 Lecture 1: Biol239 Lec 1 &2 Jan 8
Document Summary
Biol239 lec 1 & 2 mon jan 8. Genetic traits are passed on from one generation to the next. Breeding crops to have more favorable outcomes (more seeds, stock is longer) Before mendel: there were theories that one parent contributed more (not true) Reciprocal cross: a pair of crosses between a male of one strain and a female of another. Monohybrid cross: mating between 2 individuals that differ in 1 trait: the f1 all yellow, the f2 3:1 ratio yellow to green, parents true breeding. Dihybrid cross: mating between 2 individuals that differ in two traits. Polymorphic: gene that has several alleles that are normal in a population. Monomorphic: genes that only have 1 allele that is normally present. Mendel"s law of segregation: the two alleles for each trait separate during gamete formation then unite at random, one from each parent. Mendel"s law of independent assortment: states that allele pairs separate independently during the formation of gametes.
