Document Summary

In this lab we will examine the gastrointestinal tract. It has developed from two distinct embryonic sources. The mouth, esophagus, and the anus are derived from external invaginations, while the stomach and intestines are derived from endoderm. When looking at these structures take note of the epithelium and correlate this to the embryonic processes that formed the structure. Be aware that both the small and large intestine are composed of multiple organs. The small intestine is composed of the duodenum, jejenum, and ileum. The large intestine is composed of the caecum, colon and rectum. The wall of the alimentary canal, stretching from the esophagus to the anus, has a common structural plan of four layers. Starting from the lumen and moving outward, they are as follows. As this general organization is conserved in all regions try to identify these layers as you go through today"s lab.
