Have to start cell culture and then grow it. In vitro = taking pieces of tissue cells from an organism and pop them into something plastic and glass to be able to maintain them, may not grow though. Initially it was used for virology and immunology: use cultures to produce vaccines, also for cancer biology. 7 types of basic research can be done as well. Biochem, molec bio, nutrition, endocrinology, immuno, physio, developmental bio. Besides experimental advantages listed above, the use of animal cell cultures is generally being driven by a societal desire to reduce the number of animals used in science! Isolated animal cells that you grow can"t replicate what happens in whole organisms. Connective = fibroblast makes up all of connective tissue = easiest to grow, grow quickly. Muscle = designed for contraction ease of growth = okay, not overly easy. Nervous = contains neurons and glial cells, = grow relatively easy (normal cells not cancerous).
