FINE242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Veii, Lost-Wax Casting, Cella
Document Summary
Ala act as wings to storage rooms in the back. The cella is the main room in any temple and it is where the cult statue will be found to the patron god/goddess of the temple. 53m x 62m on par with some of the largest greek temples being built at the same time. Etruscans are just as capable architects and builders as contemporaries. Not made out of stone like the greeks, rather made out of perishable materials. Only foundations of stone but the superstructure is wood, terracotta or other materials. Etruscan and later roman temples do not go all the way around like the greek structures, if there are columns they are not weight bearing and are mostly decorative. Pediment is space within triangle of roof. Similar to columns greek temples are staired all the way around, while etruscan temples only have the one entrance. Almost full sized human sculptures of etruscan temples: the apollo (apulu) of veii.
