Ls 327 - lecture 3 - historical overview of policing. Bourgeoisie class conflict in early days: exploiters and exploited. Exploiters (bourgeoisie): people who owned the land and means of production, elite. Exploited (working class, proletariat): rest of the population had to work. Nobles: embedded in part of the king, required to pay taxes to the king and raise army whenever king needed. Most people live in rural areas and lived off the land under the control of the lord of the. Manure (made the rules, controlled mobility, collected fees, appointed people) some villagers would appoint a reeve and could also pass laws. Customs: behaviour that is socialized, and when broken = informal violations are used and is very effective in small communities (gossip, etc. ) laws passed by the lord were enforced by the stewart, became a method to raise revenue.
