There is a need for both leadership and management: managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing. Warren bennis: leaders provide vision and strategy, while managers implement that vision and strategy. There are 4 primary approaches for understanding leadership : traits approach, leadership qualities are innate (leaders are born, not made, personality, physical, or intellectual traits differentiate leaders from non-leaders (i. e. courage, decisiveness) Effectiveness depends on the proper match between leadership style and the situation (fit one to the other) Leadership style is fixed and determined by the lpc scale (relationship- oriented if leader"s description of least preferred co-worker is favourable, task-oriented if not) The higher the situational factors (leader-member relations, task structure, position power), the more control and influence the leader has over followers. But trait contingency, not behaviour contingency (like next two: hersey and blanchard"s theory.
