Public participation: definition, levels, what"s in involved, examples from today. Planning admin: examples from guest speakers last week, plan hierarchy. Means to involve those who are affect by the decision in the decision-making process. Ladder of citizen participation: degrees of participation, main difference is the degree to which these are involved in the process are able to influence/control the decision-making. Rational comprehensive model (1950"s) top down planning: planner were considered experts with little to no public consultation. Provides staff with information, tools and a series of worksheets. 1: listen and learn, consult, collaborate, empower. Criteria: clarity of purpose, reflective of diversity, bases on credible, balanced info, organized and facilitated, communication of results. Participation techniques: the techniques used depends, issue at hand a, audience, resources. Unrealistic expectation re. weight citizen input will hold with decision-markers. Hard to get people interested unless affects their backyard .
