MICB 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, Bcg Vaccine, Transplant Rejection
Document Summary
During an immune response to a pathogen, the cells of the immune system release a flood of cytokines. While these cytokines are important in the recruiting and activation of immune cells, they can also cause other symptoms e. g. fever, muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, nausea. While the pathogen is often blamed for making a person feel unwell, it is actually the immune response to a pathogen that is the cause of the symptoms. However, the pathogen is why the immune response was initiated. Sometimes, having an immune response can lead to serious medical complications. Sometimes the immune system can mount an immune response to something that is not harmful (might be better not to have it). Examples of undesired immune responses: allergies annoying or life-threatening, dth tuberculin reactions, transplant rejection can be life-threatening, autoimmune diseases can range from life changing to life threatening.
