Class 4b: the greeks: socrates and the beginnings of democratic citizenship. Reading 1: xenophon: apology of socrates to the jury. Other writers didn"t make it clear that socrates already thought death was more preferable to life than. Daimonion (socrates divine sign/voice) believed it was better to die now. If he got acquitted he would just eventually die a painful death from old age or sickness. Meletus and everyone else would see him sacrificing at common festivals and on public alters. How is he bringing strange daimonia by saying god manifests in him telling him what to do through a voice within him. Others are guided by a sign from god that forewarns them, either a voice (says god delphi) or birds and signs and sayings socrates just happens to call this daimonion Asks if they know anyone more fee than him (since he accepts nothing from anyone)
