How could you test if your treatment was more effective than natural improvement: compare to how participants were feeling one week ago, compare with another form of treatment, compare with no treatment, compare pre- and post- treatment. Placebo: an inert substance or treatment of no intended therapeutic value. Client"s motivation to get well may cause errors in reconstructive memory for original symptoms. Conway and ross (1984) students randomly assigned to wait list or study skills class. Afterwards, study abilities were measured and did not differ between groups. Student self reported increase in skill when objectively there was no improvement.
