PSYC 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Situationist International
Document Summary
Person-situation interaction, stability across situation, stability over time. Situationists argued that behavior varies across situations, and situational differences (not traits) determine behavior. Case in point: 2003-2004 human rights violations at abu ghraib prison in iraq behavior. You can"t be a sweet cucumber in a vinegar barrel (zimbardo) You could put virtually anybody in that situation and you"re going to get this kind of evil. If situations mainly control how people behave, then the existence or relevance of traits is. Both perspectives are true (to an extent): behavior is a function of both the situation and the person. Integration (interactionism): personality and situation interact to produce behavior. Strong situations: situations in which most people react in a similar way.
