Communication
-Communication: Process of conveying information and meaning; everyone
understands the same idea being communicated
-Influencing - cannot influence people w/o communication
-Send, receiving messages
Message Planning
- ex. Sending a reminder to groups of when they are presenting and what they
need to have done
-Goal – remind groups of presentation and requirements
-Who – to groups
-When? – several days before a presentation
-Where? – students’ emails
-How? – via email
Oral Message- Sending Process
1. Develop rapport
2. State your communication objective
3. Transmit your message
4. Check the receiver’s understanding
5. Get a commitment and follow up
Message Receiving
1. Listening
-paying attention
-avoiding distractions
-not assuming and
interrupting
-watch nonverbal
cues
-asking questions
-taking notes
-conveying meaning
2. Analyzing
-Thinking
-Waiting to evaluate
until after listening
3. Check Understanding
-paraphrasing
-watching nonverbal
cues
Getting Feedback
-Send entire message; assume understanding
-Send, ask “any questions” -Ex. Asking if there are any questions to a class after
explaining something
-Problematic- conformity- no one wants to raise their hand in a large class

Leadership must be positive - you can have expectations of others, you don"t have to be mean about it; people respond to positive motivation.
