Power: the ability to influence the behaviour of others and resist unwanted influence in return. Five major types of power, grouped into two dimensions: organizational power, personal power. Legitimate power- derived from a position of authority inside the organization (sometimes called formal authority ) Reward power- when someone has control over the resources or rewards another person wants: pay, promotions, desirable job assignments. Coercive power- when a person has control over punishments in the organization. Expert power- derived from a person"s expertise, skill, or knowledge on which others depend. Referent power- when others have a desire to be associated with a person. Low assertiveness of one"s own interests and low cooperation with the other party. Issue is trivial: want to remain neutral. Information is lacking: postpone conflict, allow for cool down period, opponent is very powerful/hostile. High cooperation with the other party, low assertiveness of own interests. Effective when: realize you are wrong, can show reasonableness.
