AHL 1100 Lecture 10: AHL1100 notes 10
Document Summary
In alberta and saskatchewan, native people were pushed into hard labor. The government would cut off people"s social assistance payments until they gave in. Debt bondage: they"ll work off their debt but their work can only go towards the accumulated interest. If they die, the debt is passed to their children. Discipline and the set of ideas normalise the situation even though it"s fundamentally wrong. There are still 25-40 thousand people working as slaves in ranching, logging and agriculture. Their situation was very similar to debt bondage, as the workers received an advanced payment and were sent to work to pay off their debt and sometimes became more indebted just by staying. They often faced violence or threats to violence against them and their families. The un states there is an absolute right not to be enslaved.
