Theories are based on questions about why the world is the way it is, and on ideas about how it might be different. Theories have practical implication because they help us make choice. It must prove themselves through a process of veri cation with the facts of the social world. Moving beyond common sense typically means understanding the world beyond right and wrong. De-segregation and increased opportunities for blacks in all public are increasing; but to assume that race no longer matters would be wrong. The point: the world is rarely what it seems. Theory allows us to probe, poke, and shake to destabilize the common sense assumptions that shapes most people"s understanding of the world around them: functionalist theory, con ict theory, symbolic interactionism, critical theories.
