Theories are based on questions about why the world is the way it is, and on ideas about how it might be different. Theories have practical implication because they help us make choices. Theory enables us to see beyond common sense . Common sense typically means in good judgment, but let"s consider the following example. Moving beyond common sense typically means understanding the world beyond right and wrong. The point: the world is rarely what it seems. Theory allows us to probe, poke and shake to destablize the common sense assumptions that shapes most people"s understanding of the world around them. Major social theories used to study sports in society: functionalist theory, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, critical theories o o o. His work on suicide were important beyond offering different ways of thinking about this specific act. It got people thinking about the individual (what one does to oneself as simply individual choice with individual implications)
