Document Summary

Cells grow, tissues, organs grow as the cells increase in size and number. We need a mechanism to be able to control that. There are mechanisms to stop growth and mechanisms to kill cells. In certain situations is it important to be able to kill those cells so that they don"t impact neighbouring tissue. And for others, it"s important to allow the tissues to develop. Embryonic development involves cell growth and also cell death to reorganize the tissue and to prune certain cells. There are molecular checkpoints- proteins at checkpoints to make sure the cells are healthy and that dna isn"t damaged. They repair whatever is damaged or can send that cell to be destroyed. Certain molecules, certain proteins, certain hormones that signal a cell to keep growing or to maintain its survival. In the absence of those messengers, the cell will have to initiate a pathway to die.
