Document Summary

There are two types of tests that can be done to determine diagnostic: Screening test: identi es asymptomatic individuals who may have the disease, tests for the presence of a factor associated with the disease. Done on individuals who don"t know whether or not have the infection/disease. Done for bacterium, viruses, or some factor associated with the microorganism. Identify infectious organism, pathogen needs to be bacterium b) Immunological tests: precipitation test, agglutination test, complement xation test, elisa, immunochromatography. When antibodies react with multiple epitopes on soluble antigens, there is formation of networks which generate an insoluble precipitate. Precipitation reactions can take place in solution, or in gels (ie. agar) When an antibody reacts with an antigen, the antibody binds to epitopes of the antigen, creating cross-linkages = aggregates. This complex becomes insoluble (precipitate), which can be visually measured in the sample. Identi cation based on metabolic characteristics (oxygen requirements, carbon sources used, oxidative or fermentative metabolism, metabolic byproducts)
