Had no idea so they had no clue how to cure it. Agostino bassi proved germ theory of disease 1844. He decided to make a map of outbreaks. Chlorea outbreaks- tended to live in particular area. Heat treatment kills bacteria and then cool it down again. Bacteria have different structures that make them susceptible to red or blue dye. You have some sort of chemical selectivity. Naturall kill the thing you want to kill. Kill only the bacteria and not touch human cells. Trypan red would selectively, caused it to be attracted to these kinds of cells. Chemical difference that only some cells will work and not others. Knew as was similar to n but more poisonous. Reasoned that this would selectively kill one type of cell. Wasn"t convenient, easy for patient to take. Had to take numerous injection over several months. Large injection volumes, has to be done slowly (1-2 hours) Bacteria wouldn"t care if not in animal.
