Certain are concentrated on a certain area and concluded that people with the disease all got it from a certain pump. Taking the handle off of this water pump lowered the disease levels in population: the pump was actually planted in a sewage pit. Louis pasteur: pasteurization (heat treatment of a liquid) kills bacteria and prevents disease, this keeps food supply safe in modern day. Lister: antisepsis technique; chemically clean areas to prevent bacteria, c. gram 1884, stains bacteria with dyes. Properties of bacteria react with dye, colouring them in a certain way. Paul erlich 1907: trypan (red dye) can selectively colour trypanosomes, selective compound that can only enter trypanosome and leave blood cells untouched, 140,000 deaths per year due to this infection, salvarsan 606.
