Drug - drug interacions: basic mechanisms, clinical signiicance, minimize adverse interacions. Paients might experience unintended or undesired interacions when taking muliple drugs: paients frequently take more than one drug because. They might need muliple drugs to treat one disorder. They might have muliple disorders that require diferent drugs. Intensiicaion of efects: increased therapeuic efects and adverse efects, example: sulbactam and ampicillin for increased efects and aspirin and warfarin for increased adverse efects. Reducion of efects: reduced therapeuic efects and adverse efects, example: propranolol and albuterol for reduced therapeuic efects and naloxone to treat morphine overdose. Creaion of a unique response: example: alcohol and disuliram. Basic mechanisms of drug -drug interacions: direct chemical or physical interacion, pharmacokineic interacion, pharmacodynamic interacion, combined toxicity. Direct chemical or physical interacion: never combine drugs in the same container, the most common are found in intravenous soluions.
