Document Summary

The purpose of this lab was to identify unknown compounds using the technique. There are two unknowns in this lab, unknown compound 94, and unknown compound zz. Chromatography is used to separate mixtures of substances into their components. In tlc there is a stationary phase and a mobile phase, the mobile phase flows through the stationary phase and carries the mixture with it. The components of the mixture are separated by their polarities, the more polar substances get stuck in the stationary phase and do not rise with the mobile phase as well as the less polar substances. Step: add 10ml of a 2:8 mixture of ethyl acetate and hexanes to two developing jars, dissolve 9mg of unknown sample 94 in. Mixture of ethyl acetate and hexanes is a colourless, transparent liquid with a strong aroma. Unknown sample 94 is a crystalline, white, solid. Sample 94 dissolves completely in the dichloromethane and the resulting mixture is colourless and transparent.
