CHM 4123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Drug Design, Drug Discovery, Drug Development
Document Summary
The first drugs discovered were from natural sources all testing was done in people. The past century has seen the creation of agencies that regulated drugs for human consumption and the shirt towards rational drug design. Rigorous testing is now required before drugs can be approved for use in people (clinical trials) Phase iii: large cohort with and without treatment to determine if drugs is effective (fda approval) Basic research for the drug discovery process; collaborate with industrial partner to pass on the groundwork to the clinical stages. Chronic disease targets dominate (cancer, asthma, arthritis; long-term and ongoing) because these are things that require treatment for the rest of the life; higher revenue in a timely manner. Antibacterial drug discoveries have mostly been eliminated by pharma companies. Treat chronic disease cancer, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disease. Goal cure the disease, maintain and prolong the quality of life. Target based drug discovery vs phenotype based drug discovery.
