Pharmaceutical agent (drug): a chemical agent taken to treat a disordered living system. Idea of personalized medicine became a fantasy post genome project. Disordered living systems (disease): caused by infection, diet or faulty functioning of a physiological process. Drug discovery: backwards approach: observation of biological situations. - encourage to observe natural products or abnormalities in communities to look for causes: forwards approach: by rational analysis. - biochemical/molecular biology analysis of primary cause of problem and determining therapeutically agents that are stable, safe and cell permeable. Medicinal chemistry: the study of the chemistry of those compounds or medicines which exert beneficial effects upon the disordered living system. Structure-activity relationships (sar): the fundamental relationship between a compound structure and it"s interaction with the body (target) Mode of action: mechanism by which the chemical influences the biological system ex. Therapeutic effects: the beneficial effect that is imparted by the chemical.
